Employability

The RUTS Employability team deliver a range of vocational and pre-employment programmes aimed at young people aged 15-24 which focus on the development of key employability skills and attributes necessary for today’s workplace.

Employability Fund – Stage 2 and 3

Part funded through Skills Development Scotland these courses are delivered over a 10-12 week structured timetable and run initially as classroom based training for the first 4-5 weeks (4 days per week) at RUTS HQ which focuses on key soft skills and employability training and leads onto a work placement for a further 4-6 weeks. Trainees will work towards an SQA accredited qualification such as the personal development award through a process of plan, do and review which is centred around an individual training plan.

RUTS Sector Academies – Stage 1 /2/3

These courses are designed around specific sectors which include Construction, Retail, Hospitality & Tourism and Office. Through a 6-8 week programme, RUTS employability staff work with young people to deliver SQA accredited employability award qualifications which centres around training tailored to the specific industry directly within local high schools in Edinburgh and Midlothian.

These courses target 15 – 19 year olds who are looking to leave education and have expressed an interest within the specific sector.

For these programmes we utilise employer partnerships who can both compliment and shape the future delivery through various interactions which include but are not limited to;

•             Pre-arranged workplace visits

•             Participating in group assessments for recruitment

•             Participating in a week’s work experience

•             Employer Talks

In addition to our mainstream employability provision, RUTS also work through various funding streams part funded through ESF, City of Edinburgh Council and Midlothian Council which provide opportunities for tailored programmes and individual interventions.

Employability
RUTS was established in 1981, by a group of enthusiastic motorcycling youth workers to provide activity-based group-work projects for young people. These projects used off-road motorcycling as an activity which took the interest of the young people involved and encouraged involvement, but at the same time provided opportunities for useful growth experiences, such as teamwork and taking instruction.
